Tokyo Motor Show 2019: Two-seater all-electric Toyota Ultra-compact BEV showcased
Toyota Ultra-compact BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) has been showcased at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The Ultra-compact BEV can seat two and resembles Kei cars - a term used for small Japanese hatchbacks that are mainly targeted to urban environments with a space crunch. That said, the BEV is 2490mm in length, 1290mm in width and 1560mm high. Toyota is yet to reveal the specs of the BEV, however, the hatchback has a range of 100kms and a top speed of 60kmph. The hatchback can be charged to 100 per cent in five hours.
Toyota also showcased its plans to boost EVs in the market that involves leasing EVs and recycling the parts and batteries. So far the release period set for the Ultra-compact BEV is the winter of 2020, however, we believe it will first step in the international markets and then be introduced in India in a phased manner - most likely early 2021.
"We want to create a mobility solution that can support Japan's ageing society and provide freedom of movement to people at all stages of life," said Akihiro Yanaka, Head of Development. "With the Ultra-compact BEV, we are proud to offer customers a vehicle that not only allows for greater autonomy, but also requires less space, creates less noise and limits environmental impact."
At the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota also showcased the Yaris which could get an Indianised version. Also sharing the space is the LQ concept, Mirai concept, GT86 and the Copen GR Sport. Stay tuned to OVERDRIVE for more updates from the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
