Official 2013 MotoGP calendar and updated rider list released
By Team Overdrive
The FIM has announced the official 2013 MotoGP calendar. The opening round of the 18-race calendar will be held in Qatar as every year, but the date has been pushed to April 7. The Argentina round of MotoGP however has been taken off the 2013 calendar, citing safety reasons. In June this year the Spanish government had asked teams and riders sponsored by Spanish oil and gas company Repsol, (primarily known for being the title sponsor for the factory Honda team amongst others) to not travel to Argentina given a rift between the Argentine government and the oil major.
The deadline for Dorna Sports to officially submit the official 2013 MotoGP to the FIM was November 18. Dorna was notified by the Spanish Government about the withdrawal of its request asking Repsol sponsored teams and riders to not travel to Argentina on November 20. By then Dorna had submitted the calendar to the FIM, which is why the Argentinian round of MotoGP has not been included in the 2013 calendar. However, given that the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit in Argentina has signed a three-year deal with Dorna, the ministry of foreign affairs Spain has confirmed that there will definitely be an Argentinian GP in 2014.
While the Buddh International Circuit is set to host a round of the World Superbike Championship in March next year, there is no word about MotoGP coming down to India. Having said that, we can only hope the Buddh International Circuit makes it to the 2014 MotoGP calendar.
