Video worth watching: The evolution of automobile safety in 25 years

For the longest time in India, safety has always taken a back seat for a lot of customers while picking out a new car. The lack of Government regulations mandating essential modern safety features in cars has given manufacturers the option to sell a car without even an airbag in this day and age. However, there is a change coming with new proposals from the Government of India. Some manufacturers have even taken the initiative to offer essential safety features like airbags and ABS as standard even before Government regulations mandate it.

One of the biggest issues in India is the lack of awareness among consumers on how dangerous road accidents are and how much of a difference these safety features make in determining their fate in an accident. This week's video shows us exactly that and also how far automobile safety has progressed in around 25 years.

The crash test, conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US, shows us a 50 per cent overlap crash at around 130kmph between two Nissans. One of them, the Nissan Versa or the Sunny as we know it, is the cheapest Nissan sold in the US. The other car, a 2015 Nissan Tsuru - which was launched back in 1992 and still lists its only technological highlight as an audio system (we're not kidding) - is the cheapest Nissan sold in Mexico. Fortunately, the Mexican safety regulations are getting stringent and this car will not be available there after 2019.
