2012 Auto Expo - Triumph Street Triple
Triumph confirmed that the Street Triple would be one of the seven bikes they are bringing to India. The Street Triple also shares the mug and build of the Speed Triple and is no slouch in the performance department. Introduced in 2007, the Street Triple was born with a 675cc engine, borrowed from the Daytona 675 but everything else is pure scaled down Speed Triple. Styling cues are almost identical to the speedier brother featuring similar 'bug eyed' twin headlamps and high mounted twin silencers.
The Street Triple's 675cc engine is also a liquid cooled, 12-valve inline three-cylinder that makes 105PS of power at 11700rpm and 68Nm of torque at 9200rpm. Front suspension is not adjustable and the rear is adjustable only for preload. Triumph claim efficiency to be in the range of 14.1kmpl for the Street Triple. Yes you have read that right; the smaller engine has lower fuel efficiency (Speed Triple has 14.4kmpl). We will investigate further when we get a chance to test one.
The Street Triple will be priced at Rs 5.75 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi and will compete with the Ducati M795 (Rs 6.99 lakh), Kawasaki Ninja 650R (Rs 4.75 lakh) and Hyosung's GT650N (Rs 4.39 lakh). Though priced in the same range and with other big name manufactures like Ducati and Kawasaki we expect the Street Triple to blow the others away with its performance. This is still only on paper so wait till we are able to confirm this.
Who would have thought that one would have so much choice for motorcycles in India? The future, for one looking to buy a sub Rs 7 lakh motorcycle is bright indeed. These are early days yet but could we look forward to a one make race series for the Street Triple, which Triumph has had some success with in Europe?
