2017 Geneva Motor Show: McLaren 720S showcased
The 2017 Geneva Motor Show is turning out to be quite a platform for performance cars. McLaren has brought in the 720S, a second-generation offering in the brand's Super Series range. The McLaren 720S replaces the 650S in the company's supercar line-up. The deliveries of the same will begin from May this year. The prices of the McLaren 720S start at £208,600 (~Rs 1.69 crore).
McLaren 720S Super Series
The McLaren 720S does resemble its predecessor but it gets interesting detailing that makes it look distinct. It gets a sharper design theme that can be seen with the multiple contours running on the front. The 720S comes equipped with LED lights placed in the air intakes. The front windshield seems to have been borrowed from the flagship hypercar, the P1. In addition, the 720S retains the butterfly doors that are seen on other McLaren cars, a characteristic trait. McLaren states that the larger door design of the 720S makes ingress and egress better than the 650S. The doors design, apart from contributing to the overall sharp theme, adds to the aerodynamics by improving airflow around the body. The dihedral doors have also replaced the air intakes on the front.
The gorgeous outside of the McLaren 720S is complemented by a driver-centric cabin. From the looks of it, the layout and design has been improved from the 650S. The main highlight of the cabin of the 720S is the swivelling instrument cluster. In normal mode, the TFT display will show the necessary information about engine speed, gear and acceleration timing. However, in Race mode, the cluster just swivels electrically and displays the gear, rpm and speed.
Powering the McLaren 720S is a new 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 720PS and 770Nm. McLaren states that the 720S can do 0 to 100kmph in 2.9 seconds and 0 to 200kmph in 7.8 seconds. The 720S can reach a claimed top speed of 341kmph. Even with all of that performance, the 720S delivers an overall efficiency of 10.7kmpl, states the company. McLaren has also added a new proactive chassis control system, along with new suspension and a power-assisted electro-hydraulic steering unit.
