BMW's range starter, the 1 Series will be getting a new-gen makeover this year. The company has already begun testing the model. From the new set of images that have surfaced online, it can be seen that BMW will be giving a more aggressive design to the hatch. And that we believe is a welcome change, compared to its predecessor. However, most importantly, the 2019 BMW 1 Series will be based on a new platform which will make it larger and also lighter than the previous offering. It is being said that BMW will reveal the 2019 1 Series in some months from now wherein the hatch will go on sale in the international markets later this year. An India launch can be expected to take place post that.

Underpinning the new-gen BMW 1 Series is the brand's UKL1 front-wheel drive platform, that is also found in other new-age offerings from BMW and Mini brand

Underpinning the new-gen BMW 1 Series is the brand's UKL1 front-wheel drive platform, that is also found in other new-age offerings from BMW and Mini brands. The UKL1 platform claims to optimise the space with an improved layout of the front-wheel drive powertrain. This will help the cabin to appear larger with more comfortable seating for the passengers as well as improved practicality with a larger luggage area. Coming to the styling bit, not that the BMW 1 Series was a bad looking car but it missed the sportier styling that a typical BMW is known for. From the spied images, one can see that might change in the 2019 BMW 1 Series. The headlights, grille, bumpers, side panels, everything looks brand new and none of that has been carried over from the previous model. Additionally, the cabin too will be revised for a 5 series-like layout. All the modern gadgetry that one can see on the new 3 and 5 series will trinkle down to the 1 Series.

Powering the 2019 BMW 1 Series will be the current range of engines that includes the 1.5 litre three-cylinder turbo petrol and also a 2 litre turbo petrol that might be offered in the 120i and 120d models
