CES 2016: Mahindra GenZe and AT&T unveil connected e-scooter
Mahindra GenZe, a US-based subsidiary of the Mahindra Group, has collaborated with American telecom multinational AT&T to develop the world's first connected scooter, using AT&T's 's Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
The GenZe 2.0 is an electric scooter which can exchange data with other AT&T products like Global SIM and Control Centre to build what Mahindra calls "the GenZe Mobile Rider Solution". The connected scooter has also been fitted with a telematics device, an installation that collects and transmits data on the usage pattern by employing AT&T's network capabilities.
Unveiled at the CES 2016, the Mahindra scoot works on a CAN (controller area network) bus network - a communications network that interconnects components inside a vehicle. The scooter is also equipped with another technology called GenZe CruiseConnect System which regulates data through a cloud-based system.
The scooter is powered by a removable lithium-ion battery that can be recharged at any standard electrical outlet. The company says that it gets some storage space to enhance its user-friendliness. There's even a separate compartment under the driver's seat where electronic devices can be recharged.
The GenZe 2.0 was conceptualised at Mahindra GenZe's headquarters at Silicon Valley. It was designed, engineered and is being manufactured at Ann Arbor, Michigan and is said to comply with the highest international and federal vehicle standards.
Speaking on the development of the e-scooter, Chris Penrose, senior vice president, AT&T Industrial IoT Solutions said, "We're changing how people live, work and get around. People can connect and monitor assets from almost anywhere. Connecting these amazing two-wheel machines is an example how we are a leader in the connected vehicle technology."
Vish Palekar, CEO, Mahindra GenZe said, "We continue to focus on meeting the demands of today's connected urban commuters and GenZe is redefining urban mobility. We deliver a fun and practical commute experience by incorporating cutting edge technology, like AT&T's IoT connectivity."
