Four-wheeler launches that took place in India during COVID19

In the new normal wherein everyone was instructed to work and operate from their respective homes to practise social distancing, automobile manufacturers started investing their resources in the digital space for the launch of their new products.  We are sure you aware of the term throwback. For the ones not aware, it is basically remembering an activity or an event that has happened in the past. In this feature, we are doing a throwback on the numerous four-wheeler launches that happened in the country during lockdown.

Kia Seltos

113PS, 1.5L petrol, 115PS, 1.5L diesel

Rs 9.89 lakh, ex-showroom

To make it an even more attractive offering, Kia brought some of the features from the top-spec variant to the lower variants. In addition to that, the company also discontinued two of its variants from the Seltos range - Smartstream Petrol 1.4T-GDI GTK and GTX 7DCT. However, the highlight of the SUV were the ten additional features, which included colour options and interior update. Details here

Mercedes-Benz GLE 450

372PS, 3.0L petrol

The GLE 450 features dual 12.3-inch displays, power-adjustable rear seats, 4-zone climate control, 20-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof and wireless charging.Notable features are the Multibeam LED headlamps, a 360-degree camera with a self-parking function, 20-inch alloys, Airmatic suspension, the MBUX infotainment system with the twin-screen layout, electrically adjustable rear seats, memory function powered from seats, four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof and electrically operated sunblinds. BMW X6

340PS, 3.0L petrol

The xLine version comes with aluminium exterior trim in the grille, roof-rail, etc., grey body cladding and unique front bumper and alloys. The M Sport version is sportier to look at with high-gloss exterior trim, an M aero package, and larger alloy wheels. The M Sport also gets unique suspension tuning, brakes and exhaust system. On the inside, the M Sport also gets M-specific pedals, steering wheel and optional carbon-fibre trim elements. The X6 also offers the option of lighting the kidney grille. Details here.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio S-CNG

60PS, 1.0L petrol

Notable features available on the Celerio VXi(O) CNG are body coloured exterior trims, power steering, power windows, central locking, 60:40 split rear seats, reverse parking sensors and two airbags. Commercial buyers can opt for the Tour H2 version priced at Rs 5.37 lakh. Details here.

BMW X7

400PS, 3.0L diesel

Range-topping X7 arrives, in M50d trim, with a quad-turbo diesel motor. Expectedly, its 5.4s run from zero to 100kmph is a big selling point, apart from it being fully specced up. The styling is iconic BMW and the X7 gets noticeably large kidney grille and the all-LED headlamps are flanked on the side. The X& is over 5 metres long and weighs almost 2.3 tonnes. The X7 is based on the X5's platform, although it has been heavily modified to accommodate seats for 6-7 passengers. More details here.

Maruti Suzuki S-presso S-CNG

67PS, 1.0L petrol

It boasts of  features like steering mounted audio and voice controls, 7-inch touchscreen with Smartplay Studio along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 12V charging sockets, and rear parking sensors. The car is offered in four variants- LXI, LXI (O), VXI, and VXI (O). The car is powered by a 1.0-litre engine that delivers a mileage of  31.2 km/kg and has a tank capacity of 55 litres. More details here

Mercedes-Benz GLS

330PS, 3.0L diesel, 367PS, 3.0L petrol

Features on the S-Class of SUVs are the 13-speaker Burmester audio system, rear Chauffeur package that pushes the front passenger seat forward with a button, airmatic air suspension, a rear-seat entertainment package, MBUX with its two 12.3-inch screens and new rear-seat control for the infotainment system.

Kia Carnival

200PS 2.2-litre Diesel

Priced substantially higher than its main rival, the Toyota Innova, the Kia Carnival also offers more in terms of style, space, comfort and features. The Kia Carnival has a longish bonnet and smart profile and substantial street presence and comes with Kia's signature 'tiger-nose' grille and wrap-around LED projection headlamps with LED daytime running lights. The features list includes VIP Nappa leather seats, dual-panel electric sunroof, dual touchscreen rear seat entertainment, and power tailgate. Tata Harrier Automatic

170PS 2.0-litre Diesel

Tata has put in a Hyundai sourced 6-speed automatic gearbox in the Harrier mated to the 2.0-litre diesel that produces an increased power output of 170PS compared to the 140PS in the previous version, while the torque figures remain the same at 350Nm. There are also some cosmetic changes in the new Harrier, with a new Calypso red colour option, two-tone diamond-cut R17 alloys and newly designed outer mirrors with turn indicators. Details here.

Mercedes-Benz V-Class Marco Polo

165PS 2.0-litre Diesel

The Marco Polo has a yacht-themed interior wood panelling and finish, a collapsible table and seating for four. The rear seats fold flat into a double bed, and can be completely isolated with blinds. The electric roof extension with a built-in foldable tent also provides a sleeping compartment for two more. The top-spec version even has a mini kitchenette with an LPG gas cylinder and a proper washbasin and sink. There is also an exterior awning and a foldable table and chairs for outdoor seating. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza facelift

105PS 1.5-litre Petrol

Cosmetic changes to the Vitara Brezza facelift are a new front bumper with larger air dam cutouts and a bull-bar motif. The details on the grille and in the headlamps have changed too, and now form one continuous element. The front bull bar design and faux skid plates add a bit to the ruggedness of the all-new Vitara Brezza and the integrated grille and headlamp create a sweeping volume that emphasizes its width. The biggest change for the Vitara Brezza is now under the hood. It gets the K15B 1.5 litre BSVI compliant petrol motor as seen in the Ciaz and Ertiga. This motor makes 105PS and 138Nm torque and gets the Smart Hybrid tech to go with it. Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 63 S

639PS 4.0-litre V8 Petrol

This is said to be the fastest 4-door series production car in the world. The GT 63 S 4MATIC+ variant comes with a 4.0-litre, V8 petrol which produces 639PS and a staggering 900Nm of torque. The AMG GT S gets from 0-100kmph in just 3.2 seconds, which is very impressive for a four-door sports car. Details here.

Land Rover Discovery Sport facelift

180PS 2.0-litre Diesel

Based on the new Premium Transverse Architecture, as on the new Evoque, the Disco Sport will benefit from electrified powertrains and a 13 per cent stiffer body. Styling wise the biggest change is the front end styling which now resembles the full-size Discovery. The new model can be told apart from the outgoing one most easily by the distinctive W-shape of the LED DRLs housed in the headlight unit. The overall styling carries forward largely unchanged, with the changes mostly restricted to new bumpers front and rear. The Discovery Sport will offer a 48V mild-hybrid option, available across the range of 4-cylinder diesel and petrol Ingenium engines, with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants available. Lamborghini Huracan EVO RWD

610PS 5.2-litre V10 Petrol

The rear-wheel drive version of the Huracan sports a 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine good for 610PS of power and 560Nm of torque. It is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which sends all the power to the asphalt via 305mm wide-section tyres in the rear. This power is said to propel the car from 0-100kmph in 3.3 seconds. By the exclusion of the all-wheel drive system, the RWD Huracan sheds around 33kg of weight, further improving the power to weight ratio of the car. Toyota Vellfire

The Vellfire comes with a 10-inch infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto in the dashboard along with 13-inch screens for rear passengers. Interior of the Vellfire can be customized with a choice of two colour options- beige and black. The Vellfire comes with three rows of seats with the second row having captain seats and the last row with a bench seat good for three passengers. However, the second row is the main highlight with all the bells and whistles to go with, including electrically operated controls, footrests and a folding desk. Details here.

New-gen Hyundai Creta

The headlines for the new Creta are the updated design, new BSVI engines and a host of new features including the BlueLink connected technologies. The new Creta is equipped with disc brakes on all fours, six airbags, ESP, VSM and the S.O.S feature. The latter is a part of the new Hyundai BlueLink connected tech suite which we first experienced on the Hyundai Venue. The Creta builds further on the extensive list of connected tech features with new remote functions like starting/immobilising the engine, pre-cooling the cabin, using the air-purifier to sanitise the cabin air, controlling the sunroof etc. Details here

Volkswagen T-ROC

Features of the new SUV include a panoramic sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, DRLs and tail lamps, leather seats and the digital instrument cluster that debuted on the Tiguan Allspace. Safety features include six airbags, hill start assist, ESP and so on. There will be six colour options available, five dual-tone and one single-tone shade. Volkswagen Tiguan All Space

190PS, 2.0L petrol

The Allspace's most notable addition is the third row of seats, which means the new SUV is 215mm longer than the standard Tiguan and has a 110mm longer wheelbase. In keeping with the carmaker's decision to move away from diesel cars in India, the Allspace will get a new 2.0-litre BSVI-compliant four-cylinder turbo-petrol motor that makes 190PS and 320 Nm. This will be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and come with AWD. Notable features include a new digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, three-zone AC, Vienna leather upholstery, LED headlamps and seven airbags. Details here.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe

The Coupe gets a new diamond grille, the streamlined lights elements - front and rear, and smaller alloy wheels which go with its comfort biased nature, compared to its AMG counterpart. The cabin looks very similar to the GLC, boasting of a new instrumentation and a larger infotainment system which now features Apple CarPlay and the acclaimed MBUX operating system with the "Hey Mercedes" digital voice assistant feature. BMW X1

Skoda Rapid TSI

Features include a new 8 inch Android infotainment system, a dual tone leatherette interior for the Onyx and green-tinted glass. The Ambition trim costs Rs 9.99 lakh, the Onyx comes in at Rs 10.19. The Style version costs Rs 11.49 lakh while the Monte Carlo costs 11.79 lakh. There are numerous paint options unique to each trim level. Skoda Karoq

Skoda Superb facelift

The butterfly grille now has a thick chrome strip running over it while the headlamps are slimmer and full matrix LED units with new elements. Also new is the front bumper. The air dam is wider and stretches the entire length of the car, also housing the wide LED fog lamps. It gets the wide Skoda lettering seen on the Scala while the tail lamps now have new detailing. The interior's biggest addition is the Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster for the Sportline version, VW's newest infotainment system and new chrome and other trim designs around the cabin.
