India needs cost effective electric cars, says Carlos Ghosn
"Electric cars available in India are too expensive", said Carlos Ghosn, chairman Renault-Nissan at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He further added that a similar situation is seen in China where state-of-the-art electric cars are not selling in great numbers.
Carlos opines that such a scenario can be dealt by designing cost effective electric cars. Ghosn claims that India is an interesting market for such cars. Automobile manufacturers need to develop newer methods and technologies to reduce costs. This will help achieve a 'modest' pricing. When asked for a timeline, Carlos answered that in a couple of years, may such cars will be launched in India.
Mary Barra, chairman and chief executive officer of General Motors Company said presently there is an industrial revolution taking place and the automobile industry is being driven by the convergence of connectivity, electrification and changing customer needs. This convergence is allowing companies to develop much cleaner, safer, smarter and more energy-efficient vehicles for customers around the world.
She further added,"I believe the auto industry will change more in the next five to 10 years than it has in the last 50, and this gives us the opportunity to make cars more capable, more sustainable and more exciting than ever before,"
