Jaguar Land Rover has designed a shape-shifting seat, that tricks the brain into thinking that the person is walking. This was designed to provide assistance to customers during long journeys, by the help of micro-adjustments made by a series of actuators. An actuator is a device which converts the electrical signals into motion and simulates seat functions. The seats will improve customer well-being by tackling health risks on the course of long journeys and will induce the rhythm of walking in the brain. However, this system can be individually altered by each driver and passenger, according to the requirements.

The seats are being trialled by Jaguar Land Rover's Body Interior Research division. By simulating the rhythm of walking, these seats can lessen the health risk of sitting down for too long. The projects have aimed to reduce the effects of motion sickness and the implementation of ultraviolet light technology to stop the spread of flu.

According to research, more than a quarter of people globally are living desk-bound lifestyles, which restrict the movement of muscles and shorten muscles in the legs, hips and gluteal, which causes back pain. All this can eventually lead to weakened muscles and less resistance towards falls or strains.

The chief medical officer of Jaguar Land Rover, Steve IIey said, "The well-being of our customers and employees is at the heart of all our technological research projects. We are using our engineering expertise to develop the seat of the future using innovative technologies not seen before in the automotive industry to help tackle an issue that affects people across the globe."
