Kerala High Court stays NGT's ban on diesel vehicles displacing over 2,000cc for two months
The Kerala High Court has passed a stay order for two months on the National Green Tribunal's ban on the registration of diesel vehicles displacing 2,000cc or more. This order was passed by Justice PB Suresh Kumar after hearing a petition filed by Nippon Toyota. The petition stated that there were illegalities in the National Green Tribunal's order, and it was passed without giving manufacturers a chance to voice their opinion.
The court, however, did not hamper with the other part of the National Green Tribunal's order which banned all vehicles which are more than 10 years old, from being driven in major cities such as Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Calicut.
The order was passed by the National Green Tribunal's bench in Ernakulam, after receiving a petition filed by the Lawyers' Environmental Awareness Forum. This plea was filed to seek action against highly polluting diesel vehicles which contribute to the high pollution levels in major cities in Kerala.
Tom von Bonsdorff, managing director, Volvo Auto India, responded to this order stating that all of the brand's models sold in India are available in sub 2.0-litre variants. He also stated that all of them "comply with the most stringent emission norms". According to his statement, all Volvos sold here are Euro-6 or BS-VI compliant and "have some of the lowest CO2 emissions among all luxury car brands in the world"
