Mumbai's Kaali-Peeli cabs launch own 9211 app
The Mumbai Taximens Union and the Mumbai Taxi Association have joined forces to launch a new app, 9211 to take on the likes of Ola and Uber cabs that have swelled over the recent years. Over 35,000 cabs, part of these taxi unions in Mumbai will offer instant cabs at Government approved rates starting at Rs 22 for the first 1.5 km.
A L Quadros who heads the Mumbai Taximen's Union said, "To keep pace with the competition from private cab aggregators, we decided to have a mobile app of our own."
These cabs will have safety features for women such as an SoS button and GPS tracker. The driver's background will be police verified as well. Initially only cash payments will be accepted however, online payments will be incorporated soon
The black and yellow taximen had opposed the rise in number of Ola and Uber cabs in Mumbai who've become increasingly popular owing to better cars, service and willingness to even ply over short distances. Ola, in fact tried to incorporate the kaali-peelis into their fleet but only 2,500, of the 35,000 fleet decided to sign up.
With the 9211 app, Mumbai's traditional taximen are hoping to draw back customers and re-ignite the popularity of the humble Kaali-Peeli. WIth 14,000 cars on the Ola/Uber platform as opposed to 35,000 traditional cabs, the winner in the end is the customer. Guess Mumbai's taxi woes may be finally over.
