Over 50,000 bookings for the Kia Sonet, diesel models account for 40 per cent

With prices for the Kia Sonet having been announced just over a month back, the achievement of over 50,000 bookings clocked comes in the two months since bookings had opened. The Kia Sonet was launched at introductory prices starting at Rs 6.71 lakh, going up to Rs 12.99 lakh for the diesel automatic. In fact, with Kia having moved 9,266 units of the Sonet in September within 12 days of its launch, the Sonet became the quickest selling compact SUV.

At the time of launch we were told the Sonet had already achieved over 25,000 bookings, with the most interest being shown for the top-end GTX+ variants for the diesel automatic and turbo-petrol iMT. Now, Kia says the petrol models (both the 1.2 and 1.0 turbo) account for 60 per cent of the total bookings, showing there's still healthy demand for diesel in the segment.

The Sonet is available in five different engine-gearbox combinations, in two main design variants, and in six trim levels. At the start of the range is the Sonet with a 1.2-litre petrol engine making 83PS/116Nm, available on with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Sonet 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, making 120PS/172Nm, is available with a choice of a 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) or 7-speed DCT automatic. The Sonet 1.5 diesel carries slightly more varied distinction, being available in two states of tune. In its base tune (with a fixed geometry turbocharger) it produces 100PS/240Nm and is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Its higher tune of 115PS/250Nm match the figures this engine make in the larger Seltos, and is available with the manual gearbox, or a segment-first torque convertor automatic transmission.
