Eagle-eyed OVERDRIVE reader Prakash Raj has caught the all-new Mahindra Bolero testing in Chennai. The new Bolero, code-named U301 is based on a hydroformed modular ladder frame chassis akin to the new Scorpio. This could lead it to command better dynamics as well as a reduction in overall weight which will give it a fuel efficiency lead over its rivals.

The new Mahindra Bolero looks boxy but compact. It is widely reported that the new Mahindra Bolero will be a sub-4m compact SUV and will aim at getting a larger share of the market that the current generation car enjoys (the Bolero sells more than 5,000 units per month). The front grille of the Bolero, from what we can glean through the camouflage, looks similar to the one on the XUV500. The side profile looks like a chopped version of the current Bolero's. At the rear, the lamps seem reminiscent of the first-generation Scorpio. The cabin is also expected to be significantly spruced up to appeal to a wider spectrum of customers.

Powering the updated Bolero will be a new generation of engines, both petrol and diesel. While the diesel could be the three cylinder turbo-diesel from the Quanto in a different state of tune, the petrol mills will be turbo units developed in association with SsangYong. Expect Mahindra to price the new Bolero very competitively with a launch scheduled most probably for late 2015.
