Spied: 2019 Maruti Suzuki WagonR spotted undisguised

The 2019 Maruti Suzuki WagonR has been spied at the company's stock yard, completely undisguised, revealing details of the new car. From the outset, it's clear that the new WagonR does not bear any resemblance to the current generation WagonR that is on sale in Japan. Instead, Maruti Suzuki has adopted an evolutionary design theme for the 2019 WagonR. The car is reportedly based on the same platform as before, however, it is longer and wider.

The tall boy design, a signature feature of the WagonR, continues and the overall silhouette of the car looks similar to the outgoing model. The front end looks entirely different with a chrome bar split grille, flanked by large headlamps. The car in the spy shot looks like one of the lower variants, apparent by the lack of fog lamps. Expect the top-spec to get them along with more chrome on the grille. The bonnet too appears to be slightly raised and this, we believe, was done keeping in mind the stringent crash test norms that are set to be introduced in India.

The side profile looks a tad bland but not as much as the old car. Maruti Suzuki has tried to add a dash of flair by highlighting the wheel arches by means of prominent creases while the C-pillar has been partially blacked out to lend the visual effect of a floating roof. Again, as we mentioned, unlike the car in the pics here that's running on steel wheels, the top variant may get alloy wheels.

Changes to the rear include a set of tall, tail lamps, redesigned bumper and a fat lick of chrome on the tailgate. The increased dimensions should translate to improved luggage space. That said, it does look like the new WagonR has a high loading lip. Whether it is or isn't a hindrance while loading luggage is something that we shall discover during the first drive review.

The interiors will sport a new design as well and in light of fresh competition, expect Maruti Suzuki to bump up the features list. This could include the Smartplay, touchscreen infotainment system in the top variants, similar to the unit that you see in the Baleno or Swift. Additionally, the new WagonR will get ABS, EBD, airbags and ISOFIX seats.

As far as powertrain options are concerned, expect Maruti Suzuki to employ the same, 1-litre, three cylinder engine that power the current WagonR, except for a few tweaks to make it BSVI compliant. It'll be mated to a five-speed manual transmission or the optional AMT.

The new Maruti Suzuki WagonR is expected to go on sale on January 23, 2019. Stay tuned for more.
