Tata Motors achieves momentous production milestone at four million cars and counting
With the four millionth Tata car rolling off production lines (a Tata Altroz), Tata Motors has achieved a significant production milestone in the three decades of its existence. Majorly known for its commercial vehicles earlier, Tata's private passenger vehicle journey began in 1991 with the Tata Sierra, based on the Tatamobile 206 pick-up commercial vehicle. With the Sierra popularly considered India's first ever SUV, the manufacturer then went on to give us India's first MPV, in the form of the Tata Sumo, and India's first-ever indigenous car from the ground up, the Tata Indica. It further added to its credentials with the Tata Safari, the country's first lifestyle SUV.
Currently the Tata Motors lineup consists of the Tiago, Tigor, Altroz, Nexon and Harrier, as well as India's first ever homegrown electric SUV, the Nexon EV. Tata is expected to add to the range soon, with a micro crossover-SUV smaller than the Nexon, codenamed the Hornbill and based on the HBX concept seen at the Auto Expo 2020. Also coming up, the all-electric Altroz EV, and the Harrier 7-seater called the Gravitas.
The Tata Sierra Turbo was introduced in 1998, with power from its 2-litre diesel bumped up to 87PS from 63PS
Picking up where the Sierra left off in 2003, the Tata Sierra EV concept shown at Auto Expo 2020 reimagines India's first-ever SUV
Coming back to production milestones, in 2005 Tata crossed the million cars mark, further crossing the three million mark in 2015, and in the years since produced its fastest one million cars for the current milestone. Tata Motors is kicking off a campaign to thank its customers, christened 'We love you 4 million'.
