Toyota to launch the new Innova Crysta in India on May 3, 2016
Toyota will launch the much awaited Innova Crysta in India on May 3, 2016. The new generation MPV will have quite a large set of shoes to fill, since the current Innova has always managed to clock 6,000 to 6,500 units per month. That's incredible, given the fact that the Innova was launched over a decade ago, and has only received periodic cosmetic face lifts, to date. The new Innova Crysta is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. The modular platform underpins various Toyota and Lexus models, including the 2015 Prius. The TNGA can accommodate front, rear and all-wheel drive configurations.
The people mover was unveiled in India at the 2016 Auto Expo. Needles to say, there were throngs of people at the Toyota pavilion, trying to get a closer look. Toyota has given the new Innova Crysta a more modern and upmarket design, evident in the new grille, side profile and the tailgate, with wrap around tail lights.
The interior features an interesting mix of slashes and swoops. The top variant will get a TFT instrument cluster and an eight-inch touch screen infotainment system, with HDMI connectivity.
The Innova Crytsa will get Toyota's new 2GD engine that displaces 2,393cc and produces 149PS. It'll come with a five-speed manual but may not get the six-speed AT that's sold internationally.
The Toyota Innova was launched in India, at a time when the highly successful Qualis had begun showing its age. It gained immense popularity after the Qualis was discontinued. The Innova's space, comfort, practicality, bullet proof diesel engine and affordable maintenance made it a favourite. It's not surprising to see many Innovas, with odo readings over 2-3 lakh kilometres, still plying on the roads. Other manufacturers had launched challengers, but the Innova continued to outsell them all. The new Innova Crysta then, has quite a reputation to match.
