The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, one of the highest selling hatchbacks in India, is now available at an attractive discount of up to Rs 42,000, plus an additional exchange bonus of Rs 20,000. The offer is available for all the WagonR variants other than the VXi and VXi ABS.

The move comes on the heels of Mahindra's announcement to slash the price of the Quanto by Rs 44,000.

As part of the offer, Maruti Suzuki is giving a straight cash discount of Rs 36,000 and an additional corporate discount of Rs 6,000. Powered by a 1-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine, the WagonR is currently available in three options - petrol, petrol/LPG and petrol/CNG. It does not have a diesel option.

The WagonR is known for its combination of pricing, space and fuel-efficiency. But in recent months, the Indian car market has been on a steady decline. The sluggish market is believed to have forced the car maker into announcing the discount on one of its best-selling passenger cars.

In a bid to attract more sales, Maruti Suzuki is also set to introduce a limited-edition WagonR Stingray in the coming months. The Stingray basically has the same engine, but comes with different styling up front and at the rear. The front gets a cleaner and sportier look with slim headlamps which may house projector-beam units, a flat bonnet and a slimmer grille and an all-new bumper with a bigger air dam. The rear has slimmer tail-lamps with clear-lens units and an all-new bumper. The Stingray will get alloy wheels as well.
