Close on the heels of the launch of the updated M5, BMW also launched the new M3 and M4, at Rs 1.19 crore and Rs 1.21 crore respectively, ex-showroom, pan-India. While the previous generation M3 was available in sedan and coupé forms, the model line is now split into the M3 sedan and M4 coupé for the fifth generation, following BMW’s new nomenclature.
Apart from the different body styles, both are essentially the same cars under the skin. Powering the two is a 3.0-litre straight six engine featuring twin-scroll turbochargers. Like the M5, the M3/4 too have traded in a couple of cylinders for lower emissions and fuel consumption, while the power output is boosted with the help of forced induction. The new engine puts out 431PS of power and 550Nm of torque, which helps the car rush from naught to 100kmph in a mere 4.1 seconds. Top whack is restricted to 250kmph or 280kmph if the M Driver Package is specified. BMW India, however, did not confirm the availability of the latter at launch.
The cars ship with 18-inch wheels shod with 255/40 and 275/40 section tyres (F/R). The 7-speed dual clutch transmission and active suspension is offered as standard. We would have loved the it if the 6-speed manual transmission was available too. The active suspension makes sense for India as the M3 and M4 are stiff cars and the Comfort mode offered by the programmable dampers provides some respite on Indian roads.
