2017 KTM 390 Duke launched in India at Rs 2.25 lakh

The big day has finally arrived as KTM has brought in its most anticipated 2017 390 Duke in India. The 2017 KTM 390 Duke is priced at Rs 2.25 lakh, whereas the 200 Duke is available at Rs 1.43 lakh, both prices ex-Delhi. KTM has also introduced the 250 Duke which slots in between the 390 and the 200 and is priced at Rs 1.73 lakh. All the dealerships will start taking bookings for these motorcycles from today onwards. KTM expects to start delivering the motorcycles next week although the 390 could take another week before the first models arrive in KTM's 325 dealerships across the country. This is a major update to the family with the KTM 390 Duke and the KTM 250 Duke featuring a new frame with a bolt-on subframe as well as new wheels, forks and more.

The KTM 390 Duke is all-new for 2017 featuring an update engine with ride-by-wire, new suspension, new brakes as well as this rather fetching new SuperDuke-inspired design. 2017 KTM 390 Duke

We had already seen the flagship KTM 390 Duke at the EICMA show last year. It retains the 373.27cc motor that now makes 43.5PS of power at 9,000rpm and generates 37Nm of torque at 7,000rpm - that is 1Nm for than before. Importantly, the 2017 KTM 390 Duke also gets ride-by-wire tech that offers a swift throttle response, claims KTM. The 2017 KTM 390 Duke also gets a slipper clutch. The difference in the real-world conditions can only be found out in our first ride which should happen soon. But on the 2017 KTM RC390 it produced an extra crispness right off the bottom that was useful for fast corners. The 2017 KTM 390 Duke promises, however, to be a changed machine with greater refinement levels.

The 2017 KTM 390 Duke gets a new colour TFT screen. This is not a touchscreen and is controlled by a set of button on the left side switch cluster. Functions include the usual plus the ability to control a paired phone and music over bluetooth. The display includes a light sensor and switches between night and day modes automatically. In addition, the KTM 390 Duke has received a design makeover that takes inspiration from the 1290 SuperDuke. It gets new LED headlights and sharper tank extensions that give the Duke a bigger motorcycle look. More importantly, the tank extensions run forward but not outwards which combines with the new softer seat to produce a more spacious motorcycle. Underneath that sporty design is a 13.4-litre steel tank which should dramatically improve the short highway range of the 390 Duke. The other important highlight is the new TFT instrument cluster which is only offered on the 390 Duke. The weight of the motorcycle has gone up 7kg but the extra torque should mask that - test ride soon should confirm this. On the chassis from, KTM is now using open cartridge forks that KTM says allow more control. They remain 43mm in diameter but KTM has marked two notches at the top of the forks to allow customers to opt for slightly lazier steering if they like by lowering the forks through the triple trees. At the rear is a new monoshock as well. As we noted from our meetings at EICMA, the new KTM 390 Duke is said to offer a level of sophistication that is a marked improvement over the thrilling but relatively raw outgoing model. To this end, KTM has raised the prices by approximately Rs 23,000 to Rs 2.25 lakh ex-Delhi.

2017 KTM 250 Duke

The KTM 250 Duke gets the same design language as the bigger 390 Duke but it also comes in white in addition to the same orange/black scheme as the 390. It is based on the same lightweight steel trellis along with the newly developed bolt-on subframe. This one is powered by a 248.76cc motor that makes 30PS and 24Nm and also comes with slipper clutch similar to the 390 Duke. It also gets a side-mounted exhaust unlike the previous model. However, the 250 Duke is a far simpler motorcycle. First, it does not get ride-by-wire like the 390 and is a more basic fuel-injected, liquid-cooled machine like the KTM 200 Duke. On the other hand, its chassis is more similar to the 390's in the sense of the new subframe, the same open cartridge forks and the rear suspension. The 250 also gets a slightly different set of rims - shared with the 390 in spec but black in colour. But the instruments and the brakes are exactly the same as the 200 while the headlight is shaped on the outside like the KTM 390 Duke's LED cluster but is actually a rather cool looking halogen unit. KTM India also clarified that the omission of ABS from this model is primarily for pricing reasons and that except for the availability of ABS on export models, this is the only spec the KTM 250 Duke will be made in for India and for export markets.

For 2017, the KTM 200 Duke sticks to its guns and apart form becoming a BSIV compliant model, not much has changed. The simpler graphics do look good through. The only other change is the in the instruments which display information slightly differently than before.

2017 KTM 200 Duke

The KTM 200 Duke has now become the entry-level model. KTM has not made any design changes to this one. The 200cc motor puts out 25PS and 19.2Nm mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Interestingly, KTM has dropped the prices of the 2017 200 Duke in comparison to the previous model. Both the 200 and the 250 Dukes do not come equipped with ABS which is a standard feature on the 390. The 2017 KTM Duke range is now BS-IV compliant. Again, KTM does make an ABS-equipped model for export but that's the sole difference - according to the company - between the Indian 2017 KTM 200 Duke and the export models. The KTM 200 Duke's price has not changed, Rs 1.43 lakh ex-Delhi.
