2018 Aston Martin Vantage showcased: Top ten things you should know

Whenever Aston Martin launches a new car, it is a given that the car will be exquisite and gorgeous. Ending speculation on the design, features and specs, the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage has finally been unveiled. In addition to the traditional shades of grey-silver, the 2018 Vantage also gets a fluorescent green, that's so unlike an Aston Martin. The Vantage model name appeared first in the 50s as more powerful version of the DB2. Later in the years, Vantage models appeared in Aston Martin's sprawling portfolio of special cars. The 2018 Aston Martin, thus has a big responsibility. Here are top ten things that you should know about the latest Vantage.

1) Styling

The all-new Aston Martin Vantage gets its styling inspiration from the DB10 that was seen in the James-bond movie Spectre. The new age lights in the front and the rear are a welcome change compared to the previous. Not that we had any complaints about those but then it was time for a design update.As seen from the images, aerodynamics has played a big role in shaping the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage. The splitter under the bumper guides the airflow underneath the body which is also then fed to the engine from down below with the help of fences.

The DB11 styling inspiration on the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage is evident

The rear diffuser, in addition to looking really sporty, also helps in reducing the resistance and cut down on the turbulence created by the rear wheels, disturbing the airflow beneath the body. The side gills have been properly integrated with the flowing contours of the side panel. They also help in helping the air flow outwards from the front wheel arches. Aston Martin claims that the 2018 Vantage will produce a significant level of downforce.

Aston Martin cars are known for their attractive cabin design and the 2018 Vantage carries the same trait. In line with the aggressive exterior, the cabin sports busier dashboard design and a comparatively lower driving position. This should make the driving experience a lot more engaging than before. The dashboard design has been made a lot more edgier than the one on the DB11. Among the regulars (for an Aston Martin) the dash features multiple rotary and toggle-style controls. And then there is a long never ending customization list which can individually select the trim colour, material, choice of wheel design and yes, if needed, carbon fibre finished interior as well.

3) Infotainment

The infotainment screen on the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage is based on the COMAND unit from Mercedes-Benz

The 2018 Aston Martin Vantage comes with a 8-inch infotainment screen. This system is based on Mercedes' COMAND unit and hence comes with the similar options and controls. If only a car that looks so ravishing came with a more modern CarPlay and Android Auto compatible infotainment system.

4) Practicality

Not that it is a make or break factory but the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage gets a 350-litre boot space, similar to a Tata Nexon SUV in India. This should be prefect for that weekend getaway or even a trip to the golf course with friends. Aston Martin claims that the the Vantage will deliver an overall efficiency of 11.30kmpl, which is decent for a car that spits so much of power and torque

5) Engine

The heart of the 2018 Aston Martin also does duty in the Mercedes-AMG GT

The powertrain that is offered on the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage is the same as the one that comes in the Mercedes-AMG GT. Instead of a V12, the 2018 Vantage is powered by new four-liter twin-turbo V8. The motor has been positioned lower and towards the rear in the chassis for ideal weight distribution and optimal centre of gravity.

6) Performance

The V8 heart of the Vantage puts out 510PS at 6,000rpm and generates 685Nm at 2,000rpm to 5,000 rpm. Aston Martin claims that the 2018 Vantage can reach 60 mph (96.56kmph) in a mere 3.5seconds and can reach a top whack of 314 kmph. Interestingly, this makes the new Vantage quicker than the previous V12. Also, as claimed by the manufacturer, the motor makes a distinct exhaust note.

7) Chassis

Lightweight aluminium makes sure the 2018 Aston Martin weighs lesser than the car it replaces

The 2018 Aston Martin Vantage is based on an all-aluminum architecture and weighs 1,500kg that is on par with the Porsche 911. Additionally, it is close to 200kg lighter than the previous gen car.

8) Differential

The 2018 Aston Martin Vantage will be spending more time in corners and bends

What makes the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage special is that is it the first model to get an electronic limited slip differential at the rear. That essentially means, the 2018 Vantage will have razor sharp handling and one can easily go sideways in this. Helping that are adaptive dampers and torque vectoring system.

9) Prices and Availability

Deliveries of the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage should begin by middle of next year

The new Vantage is £25,000 (Rs 21.45 lakh) more expensive than the previous-gen car. Prices start at £1.25 lakh (Rs 1.07 Crore, excluding duties and taxes). Deliveries will begin in the middle of next year and we believe Aston Martin might get it to India soon after its international deliveries start. Early 2019, perhaps.
