If you find petrol-engined SUVs interesting, here's some good news. The all-new, 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander has just been launched in India, priced at Rs 31.95 lakh (ex-showroom) for the 2.4L 4WD with a CVT gearbox. The Outlander name, in fact, makes a comeback to the Indian market after a long hiatus, after it was discontinued by Mitsubishi India citing low sales numbers. Mitsubishi is a name that has been associated with SUVs in India for long, most notably the Pajero. And the Mitsubishi Outlander needs no introduction either as it was popular with SUV buyers looking for a less hardcore alternative to the Pajero.

The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander gets a thorough redesign, incorporating the Japanese manufacturer's new design language, which makes for a far more upmarket appearance than the older version offered in India. The styling is a lot bolder with a more rugged looking face, unlike the previous Outlander's, that had borrowed styling cues from the Mitsubishi EVO X that was sold in India briefly. Mitsubishi has once again chosen to launched only a petrol engine equipped version of the Outlander in India, powered by the same 2.4-litre, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder petrol engine. The engine offers the same 167PS and 222Nm as before and is mated to a CVT that also allows you to choose ratios via steering-mounted paddle shifters.

The new generation Outlander gets an AWD system that powers the front wheels primarily but will power the rear wheels as well whenever required, in auto mode. You can, of course, lock AWD via a button. Apart from AWD on demand, you also get an electronic differential lock, hill-hold, and ESP as well on the driver aids front. Interiors of the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander have been updated too and look a lot more modern and get a 6.6-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system.

The Outlander is a seven-seater SUV and also gets equipment like seven airbags, a Rockford Fosgate audio system as before (with a woofer placed in the boot), dual-zone climate control and keyless entry. The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander will primarily take on the soon to be launched Honda CR-V in India, though it is also an alternative to SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour, if in the market for a premium, seven-seater, petrol-engined SUV.
