The Volvo XC40 is the Swedish car maker's smallest and newest SUV yet. Showcased internationally last year, the XC40 is slated for an India launch early in July and will compete with German SUVs like the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA in the compact luxury SUV segment. It is powered by Volvo's 2.0-litre, four-cylinder D4 diesel engine which offers 190PS and 400Nm and the XC40 also comes equipped with several first-in-class features including Volvo's radar-based driving systems. The Volvo XC40 impressed when we drove it first in Europe and we have driven in India too. Initially Volvo will only launch the fully-loaded, top of the line R-Design variant of the XC40 in India which feels like it belongs to a segment above with its rich, classy interiors and the long equipment list. Here's a detailed image gallery telling you all you need to know about the XC40.

The Volvo XC40 gets Volvo's signature face including the rectangular grille that houses the brand's famed 'iron logo', as also the 'Thor's Hammer's LED daytime running lamps that are now a Volvo design trait

From the sides the Volvo XC40 looks taller and more SUV-esque as compared to its German rivals. Notice the distinctive looking rear window line that is angled upwards sharply at the C-pillar. The gloss black paint you see for the roof here is exclusive to the top of the line R-Design variant only

The Volvo XC40's rear end is simple yet elegant looking - the tail lamp cluster design is again typical of all Volvo SUVs though the cluster looks fresh and very modern here. The Volvo name is stretched across the boot lid as always though the rear number plate is positioned below the boot lid on the bumper which makes for a clean appearance. The dual chromed exhaust tips add a hint of sportiness too

The 'Thor's Hammer' LED daytime running lamps also double up as turn indicators and look nice when flashing in amber

The Volvo XC40 R-Design runs on 18-inch alloy rims that are shod with specially developed, 235/55 R18 Pirelli P Zero tyres

Seats in the Volvo XC40 R-Design are covered in part-leather, part-Alcantara to offer a premium feel and are very supportive - be in terms of bolstering or lumbar support

The drive selector lever in the Volvo XC40 is a short, stubby unit and looks distinctive

The Volvo XC40 R-Design comes equipped with a high-end, 13-speaker Harman/Kardon music system that offers excellent voice clarity and bass

The rear air-conditioning vents in the Volvo XC40 also get the same, trademark vertical design with a brushed metal finish and knurled stubs to move them around

Controls for Volvo's radar-based driving systems like adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, lane keep assist and more are placed on the left hand side of the steering wheel

The R-Design variant of the Volvo XC40 gets a wireless charging pad to charge smartphones. Volvo claims the pad can charge most smartphones in about an hour's time

The Volvo XC40 gets a 9-inch touchscreen as standard for its infotainment system that offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and boasts a high resolution along with excellent touch sensitivity

Nestled beneath the touchscreen are volume and track change controls for the music system. At the extreme right is the switch that lets you choose drive modes - the XC40 gets Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, Off-road and Individual modes

The Volvo XC40's key fob looks and feels premium as it is wrapped in leather and gets the same perforated finish as the seat covers
