Tata Motors' Harrier has been the subject of many a speculation lately, what with the numerous spy images and teasers released, and ahead of our first drive, we finally have details on the new five-seater SUV.
The Harrier is based on the Land Rover Discovery Sport platform, which Tata calls the Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced Architecture, or OMEGA Arc in short. Accordingly, it boasts of dimensions that overshadow anything else in the segment - 4,598mm in length and with a 2,741mm wheelbase. Ground clearance is 205mm, with the Harrier riding on 235/65 17-inch tyres.
It has been confirmed that the SUV will not offer four-wheel drive at this time, with its 2-litre diesel powertrain only driving the two front wheels of this 1,675kg kerb weight SUV. The 1,956cc inline four-cylinder diesel (as on the Jeep Compass) puts out 140PS of power and 350Nm of torque, lower figures than the Compass. It's available with a six-speed manual transmission, but does get off-road driving modes to make the most of its FWD powertrain when off the road. As for braking, it has a front disc-rear drum brake set-up, with ABS, EBD and the assortment of hill hold and descent control systems, apart from brake vectoring.
But for many people, the way the Harrier looks is the main draw, with its very distinctive styling sure to set it apart on the road. Finally, here's the Harrier in the flesh, with all the details shown in pictures.
