Ashok Leyland Optare launch new MetroDecker bus in London

Ashok Leyland who owns 75 per cent stake in UK based bus manufacturer Optare, launched their new double-decker in London. Optare's MetroDecker will be its first double-decker bus in production after the Hinduja takeover.

The main objective of Optare with the MetroDecker was to create a fuel efficient bus, which it claims to have achieved. MetroDecker weighs below 10 tonnes and uses an optimised Mercedes engine. This is coupled with a smart "Ecolife" gearbox which turns off the ignition automatically everytime the bus comes to a halt.

Enrico Vassallo, the CEO of Optare said, "We have worked hard to assess and evaluate every part of the vehicle to ensure it is as efficient as possible; consolidating parts, reducing complexity and removing duplication. And all this has been achieved with real-world fuel savings and outstanding safety and customer comfort at the top of our agenda."

OPTARE unveils the MetroDecker

CHENNAI: Optare, Ashok Leyland's subsidiary in the UK, launched the MetroDecker, its exciting new double decker bus in London on Wednesday. Designed and built at a state-of-the-art assembly facility in Leeds, the MetroDecker leverages Optare's extensive experience and engineering capabilities and boasts exceptional build-quality, comfort and optimised operational efficiency.

The stylish new MetroDecker shares a common platform with its single deck siblings and has been designed with the dual purpose of improved fuel economy and increased customer comfort. Cost efficient to operate and with improved operational and customer service capabilities, Optare MetroDecker will be a valuable asset to any fleet.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. G. P. Hinduja, Co-Chairman of the Hinduja Group said, "We are extremely proud that Optare is transforming itself into a truly international company, with the able support of Ashok Leyland, our group flagship that carries over 100 million people on its buses every day. In the first phase, Ashok Leyland invested heavily in upgrading Optare's capabilities by consolidating production in an all-new manufacturing facility in Leeds. As part of the second phase, Ashok Leyland is supporting the development of a new series of products that will open more markets for Optare."
