Aston Martin and Red Bulls AM-RB 001 hypercar can reach over 400kmph
It is already known that Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing have been working together on a hypercar project called the AM-RB 001. And now more details of the same have surfaced. The AM-RB 001 will rival the likes of the LaFerrari and McLaren P1, and is being designed by a team headed by Marek Reichman, design head, Aston Martin along with Adrian Newey, chief technical officer, Red Bull Racing.
While the concept images of the AM-RB 001 are already on the Internet, the production form of this hypercar will closely resemble the same, states Reichman. The company is presently working on tweaking the design further to improve the aerodynamics as well as improve the cooling system. This might lend to a few additional bits on the overall design, but the AM-RB 001 will retain most of the characteristic features of the concept model. Also, the hypercar will have motorised opening of gullwing doors.
Aston-Martin has not still mentioned the exact displacement of the engine powering the AM-RB 001, but it will be using an all-new motor. The engine displacement will be either a 6.0-litre or a 7-litre V12 churning out 1,000PS and will peak at 9,500rpm. This motor will be mated to a single-clutch transmission developed by Xtrac, the same company that provides gearbox for Aston Martin racecars. It will reach a claimed max speed of over 400kmph.
The racecar will use a single-clutch instead of the dual-clutch to save weight. Reichman claims that the AM-RB 001 will be an ultralight offering weighing a mere 1,000kg, making it lighter than the LaFerrari by 585kg and the McLaren P1 by 547kg. This has been achieved by using carbon fibre and titanium in the car's construction while the wheels use carbon fibre and magnesium. Carbon fibre is also used in the some of the engine components while the block is finished in aluminium.
The motor will be paired to an 80PS KERS system and doesn't work like other hybrids. It only comes into play at lower speeds and during the starting of the motor. Additionally, it will provide a boost at certain occasions but for a limited time. He also mentions that the AM-RB 001 can clock an estimated maximum speed of over 400kmph. The team claims to be working on the AM-RB 001 to make it deliver 4.5Gs while cornering. With that kinds of performance, the AM-RB 001 will enter into the F1 dynamics category.
The performance of the AM-RB 001 will definitely make it one of the most hard-core machines on the track, but at the same time it will be an easy to drive in the city too, states Reichman. The production run for the AM-RB 001 will be limited between 99 to 150 units, and Aston Martin will also roll out 25 dedicated cars for track-only purpose. One can see the first prototypes on the streets by late 2017 while deliveries are expected to begin from early 2019. Priced are expected to be around $4m.
