Datsun GO spotted testing in India, will launch next year

Team OD Updated: October 28, 2013, 05:00 PM IST

Nissan first resurrected the Datsun brand earlier this year and showcased the first Datsun, the GO, a small hatchback to compete with Maruti WagonR. With the launch, OVERDRIVE was the first to report Nissanincluding a Datsun MPV, which we now know as the Datsun.

The GO is set for its world launch early next year, and the hatch has been spotted testing on Indian roads. A picture of the GO test mule in Chennai was posted earlier today by IndianAutosBlog. While the badges and logos had been taped, the car didn't have any of the wraps usually associated with a test car.

There are no visible changes to the GO unveiled earlier this year. Inspite of its compact exteriors, the GO looks quite spacious as is evident from the unveil pictures. It has a front and rear bench, though the one in front doesn't get a seat belt and is only big enough to accommodate a child or a handbag. There is also a mobile dock holder, while the gear lever is dash mounted.
The GO uses Nissan's acclaimed and versatile V-platform. It will be powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine from the Micra. However, it is likely that the GO will be tuned for outright fuel efficiency than performance to take on the Maruti line of hatchbacks. At a later date, there is a chance that the K9k diesel engine from the Micra may also be used.

Datsun will be making the GO at its Oragadam facility in Chennai and promises an asking price within Rs 4 lakh for it. The GO is expected to take on the likes of the upcoming new Alto/A-Star, Wagon R and Chevrolet Spark. Nissan will also likely manufacture the GO and GO+ at its Indonesian facility.
