Digital rearview mirror being brought from race to production by Audi
Audi will be bringing the digital rearview mirror technology from its race-bred R18 to the production R8 e-tron. Lacking a rear window, the new e-tron will use the camera/monitor system which produces a high-contrast image on the 7.7-inch AMOLED screen inside the car. The new rearview mirror camera is located in a housing which can be heated when the climate turns cold. The driver can even deactivate or dim the display at his will.
Audi says that they are working on adding additional information on the monitor in future. Compared to conventional LCD monitors, Audi claims that the display that they use courtesy Samsung is lighter, thinner and more energy efficient. Irrespective of the ambient temperature, switching times are just few milliseconds.
