Lewis Hamilton and team-mate Nico Rosberg lock out the front row at the 2016 British GP

Lewis Hamilton took a fine pole position at the qualifying session for the 2016 British GP. This, despite the fact that his first timed lap during Q3 had been deleted with the stewards deeming that Hamilton had exceeded track limits on that particular lap.

The Mercedes AMG F1 driver had looked fast all through the qualifying sessions, even breaking the lap record during Q2. His first run of 1min 29.339sec, which was three-tenths quicker than nearest rival and team-mate Nico Rosberg, was deleted after he exceeded track limits at Copse corner. Hamilton made up for it with an even quicker lap time of 1min 29.287sec, ending quali four-tenths faster than his team-mate.

The second row of the grid sees a lockout by the two Red Bull Racing cars, with Max Verstappen beating team-mate Daniel Ricciardo to third place. Kimi Raikkonen qualified fifth for Ferrari, while his team-mate Sebastian Vettel managed a sixth-fastest time. However, Vettel will start the British GP down in eleventh place thanks to a penalty for a gearbox change.

Valtteri Bottas was seventh fastest, with Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz eighth fastest. Nico Hulkenberg took the Force India to ninth spot on the grid, while Fernando Alonso took tenth place.
