Bernie Ecclestone will no longer be running the sport of Formula 1

Ever since Liberty Media’s takeover of Formula 1 came to light, a question mark hung over Bernie Ecclestone’s future in the sport. Things have finally become clear now that the American company has taken over the commercial rights of Formula 1. Bernie Ecclestone is no longer F1 boss and has been dismissed from his role. Chase Carey, Formula 1 Chairman, has been assigned the addition role of Chief Executive Officer.

Ecclestone confirmed his axing in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, saying that he no longer runs the company and has officially been dismissed. While he did acknowledge that he has been offered the role of “Chairman Emeritus”, he also stated that he had no idea what the role entailed.

“I’m proud of the business that I built over the last 40 years and all that I have achieved with Formula 1, and would like to thank all of the promoters, teams, sponsors and television companies that I have worked with,” Ecclestone said in his brief official statement after his dismissal.

Meanwhile, Greg Maffei, the President and CEO of Liberty Media thanked Ecclestone for his years of contribution to the sport, but also declared that he believed that Carey, in his new role as CEO, would be the right person to take Formula 1 forward.

Carey himself stated that he was excited to work with the FIA, the sponsors and promoters in a bid to add new dimensions to the sport of Formula 1.

In other news, Ross Brawn has been given a role, within F1, as managing director of motorsports.
