Datsun Go long term review: After 10 months and 6,363kms

It's difficult to believe that we've spent nearly half a year with the Datsun Go. When it came to us, we weren't sure what to expect from this low cost car from a manufacturer making its comeback after around three decades. But all those concerns were quickly put to rest as we soon found ourselves fighting for its possession. That's because in the city, the Go traverses through jams and thick traffic with the agility of a Roadrunner.

I've already spoken about some of the things I liked – like its peppy engine, pleasant design, and about things that I did not – like the bench seat and the ergonomics of the gearshift lever when the seat is moved.

Here are a few more observations I've made over time. When a car is built to cost, it's only a matter of time that the build quality will falter. So the lever that opens the fuel cap now demands some fiddling to open. And the music system is the most basic I've seen in a modern car since the times of cassette players, which is even more obvious as I've been sampling the Burmester sound system in the S-Class and the Bower and Wilkins in the new Volvo XC90. It's like the difference between listening to an old school radio and sitting at the centre of the first row of seats in the Gothenberg Symphony Orchestra. Of course there's no comparison but I do appreciate the decision to dispense with the CD player that almost no one uses these days. Instead the auxiliary cable, and the addition of the USB charger on the dash works quite well, at least for me. It signifies what this car is about - no nonsense but still quite fun. I know the time to part with the Go is imminent and I'd be lying if I said I won't miss it.

Total mileage: 6,363km, date acquired: Jun 14, This month mileage: 2,489km, fuel: 191 litres, efficiency: 13kmpl
