Product review: HJC RPHA 11 pro
The RPHA 11 Pro is the top of the line helmet in the HJC range and is an evolution of the RPHA 10 that was worn by MotoGP stars such as Jorge Lorenzo. The helmet features a host of design and technological improvements over its predecessor and the example you see here is the Ben Spies replica.
At first glance, the RPHA 11 Pro looks identical to the RPHA 10 but there are a number of improvements over the previous helmet. The shell is made of a new Premium Integrated Matrix Plus (PIM+) material that incorporates a woven blend of carbon fibre, aramid, fibreglass, and organic non-woven fabric to create a stronger yet lighter shell than before. At 1,350g, the helmet feels pretty light and comfortable for all day use.
I also loved the paint quality. It's surprising how easy it is to wash off stubborn stains and grime after a long day in the saddle. It's been over a year that I've been wearing the RPHA 11 and there's no paint fade even after being exposed to varying weather conditions. Another feature that came in handy on the race track was the large viewing port that has been widened by 5mm at the top. It allows a better field of view in a racing tuck, something that I struggled with the HJC FG-17, my previous lid.
Aerodynamics on the RPHA 11 are excellent, with no buffeting or excessive noise at speed. The redesigned rear spoiler plays a major role in offering superb stability at ultra-high speeds. I've worn this helmet on almost all types of motorcycles, from cruisers to street nakeds and supersports and no matter the speed, the helmet was unaffected. I guess as a MotoGP spec helmet, this was a given.
The inner material, be it over the cheek pads or the crown feels premium to the touch. Made of anti-bacterial Multi-Cool fabric for better moisture wicking and quick drying, it helps air out the insides quickly after a day spent riding in the sun. The only gripe I have with the RPHA11 is the venting that seems inadequate at low speeds. Opening the vents at the top, chin and forehead does provide some respite but unless there's decent airflow, you do tend to sweat a lot.
All told, there's no match for the RPHA 11's price to performance ratio. You get a MotoGP spec helmet without really breaking the bank and not to forget, this is one good looking helmet. The HJC RPHA 11 Pro meets DOT standards and is ECE 22.05 approved, has a five-year warranty, and comes in sizes XS to XXL.
