GM readying a new vehicle platform for India

18 Jun 2014 / 0

General Motors is working on a new platform that could underpin three new car models in the future. The platform has been code-named as Amber. The platform will spawn a premium hatch, a compact sedan and a compact SUV. The platform is primarily built for emerging markets such as India, Brazil, Mexico and Thailand.

The cars sporting this platform are not expected before 2018. This means that GM will have to come up with another solution to solve its current market crisis. The Chevrolet Adra SUV concept, which was shown at the Auto Expo, was based on the Gamma 2 platform. Whether it comes before 2018 or if the new compact SUV is based on the Adra isn’t certain yet.

GM India had recently launched the Chevrolet Complete Care programme. The company has refused to comment on the development and has said that the GM India  as of now has a good competitive line-up.

Things haven’t been good for Chevrolet in India. After piling up losses to the extent of 2740 crores till the end of FY ’13, Chevrolet hasn’t exactly taken solid steps to stem these losses. Neither is the Sail clicking nor are there any customers making a beeline for the Enjoy. Even the Beat, Spark and Cruze are in desperate need of a proper update. Though the new platform is a step in the right direction, Chevrolet might not be able to cover much distance with the ground slipping under its feet right now.
