Honda recalls 1.9 lakh cars in India over faulty front passenger airbags
Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL) will recall over 1.9 lakh cars in the country. The Japanese auto brand is conducting the recall drive to replace the front passenger Takata airbag inflators, a part of the global recall campaign. The affected models include the previous-generation of Accord, CR-V, Civic, City and Jazz. Honda will replace the airbag inflators at all its dealerships and not change the owners any additional costs.
Honda will be replacing the front passenger inflators in 22,483 units of the Accord (2003-2011), 1,514 units of the CR-V (2009 - 2011), 13,605 units of the Civic, 1,37,270 units of the City (2008-2011) and 15,706 units of the Jazz (2009-2011). The campaign is set to be executed in different phases, starting with the CR-V and Civic from July 15, 2016, whereas that of other models will begin from September 2016. The company will be sending official communication to the customers directly.
Honda India carried a similar drive in 2015, where the company replaced the front driver airbags of 2.24 lakh cars. The affected airbag inflators deploy an explosive force due to a chemical propellant which sprays shrapnel at the passengers in case of an impact. Honda USA has reported eight fatality cases for the same, which was in addition to over a hundred injuries related to the same issue. Apart from the Honda, car manufacturers like Toyota, General Motors, Ford and BMW were also affected.
