Jeep has finally unveiled its most anticipated offering in India, the Compass. While the American SUV manufacturer has just revealed the Compass in the country, it will go on sale from August this year. The Jeep Compass will be locking horns against two of the most popular SUVs in the country, the Hyundai Creta and the Mahindra XUV500. We had learnt earlier that this global C-segment SUV will sport an introductory price tag of Rs 16 lakh (ex-showroom) which will help Jeep position the Compass aggressively against the competition. The Jeep Compass will be manufactured at four different facilities - Toluca in Mexico, Pernambuco in Brazil, Guangzhou in Brazil, and Ranjangaon in India.

The Jeep Compass gets a sharp and sculpted look. It looks like its bigger Grand Cherokee sibling; however, the LED headlamps as well as tail lamps are new bits unknown to the Jeep range. The black 17-inch alloy wheels look especially nice on this SUV. At 4.4 metres, the SUV is fairly large, and in terms of space, it should match or better the likes of the Hyundai Tucson. The Compass is a 5-seater with the rear seats featuring a 60:40 split configuration that gives it the flexible luggage-carrying capacity. The interiors are also designed to match segment rivals. Jeep states that the made in India Compass is manufactured in 50 different trim, powertrain, transmission and colour options to offer Indian consumers a host of options to choose from.

The powertrains that will be offered in the Jeep Compass in India are 1.4-litre MultiAir petrol that makes more than 160PS of power and generates 250Nm of torque, whereas the diesel models will make use of a 2.0-litre unit that churns out more than 170PS and makes 350Nm of torque. Both these engines comply with the latest BS-IV emissions and can be scaled up to meet BS-VI emissions as well. These engines will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

In addition, there will be a 7-speed dual-dry clutch automatic transmission for the petrol models. The Jeep Compass comes with all the 4×4 bells and whistles that the American SUV brand is known for. The Jeep Compass also features Jeep Active Drive with Selec Terrain Traction management System. In addition, there is the Driveline Disconnect Technology that disconnects the drive to the rear wheels when not required which in turns helps reduce fuel consumption. It also comes with variable Frequency Selective Damping that adjusts itself automatically according to the road undulations.

In terms of safety, the Jeep Compass will come equipped with six airbags, traction control, hill start assist as well as 50 active and passive safety features, including ABS, EBD, disc brakes and cornering lamps as standard. Jeep also states that the Compass makes use of high-strength steel with hot-stamped steel that offers a lighter and safer cabin to resist collision impact. The SUV manufacturer has tested the Compass globally at over 28 million kilometres.
