Mahindra to develop 2.2l petrol engines for Scorpio and XUV500
Mahindra's executive director, Pawan Goenka has said that the company is developing a 2.2l petrol engine for use in the Scorpio and XUV500. The company will be investing close to Rs 1,000 crore over the course of the next two to three years towards this project. Currently the company has a lone 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine in the KUV100. This mill was developed with assistance from SsangYong.

In an interview, Goenka said that there will be a 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre petrol mill that will be developed in-house while the much bigger 2.2-litre will be co-developed with SsangYong. The move from Mahindra comes after the Supreme Court's ban on sale of diesel vehicles with a 2.0l or bigger engines in New Delhi. Mahindra recently downsized its 2.2l diesel motor to 1.99l and is expected to restart sales of the XUV500 and Scorpio in Delhi. Goenka also said that the company is looking at sharing platforms with SsangYong, however, this will be at a later stage.
A source tells us that Mahindra is also looking at alternate fuels like CNG to expand its range. At the Mahindra Imperio launch, another source told OVERDRIVE that the company is already exploring CNG as an option for all its LCVs.
