Maruti Suzuki ends production of the Ignis diesel variant

OVERDRIVE has learnt from Nexa dealers in Mumbai and Delhi that Maruti Suzuki has discontinued production of diesel version of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis hatchback. Examples present with dealerships are from their current inventory and no new stock is being manufactured.

The primary reason for this development is the low sales numbers. The Ignis hasn't been a runaway success like other Maruti products like the Baleno and Vitara Brezza. Most buyers have been opting for the petrol version which continues to be offered in both manual and AMT versions. The 1.2-litre motor four-cylinder petrol puts out 83PS and 113Nm.

A further reason for this development could be the narrowing gap in petrol and diesel prices. The price premium is too high to justify, especially in a car like the Ignis which buyers will prefer using in urban conditions. This is also in line with the general perception of petrol motors being more linear and refined, leading to a more fulfilling driving experience.
The diesel Ignis was powered by the 1.3-litre Multijet motor which put out 75PS and 190Nm. This motor is still available across Maruti's range in its other models.
