Mercedes-Benz E-Class All Terrain 4x4 SUV concept unveiled

Team OD Updated: July 26, 2017, 02:33 PM IST

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled this mad E-Class All Terrain 4x4² concept. Based on the E-Class All Terrain, the SUV concept is the creation of Jurgen Eberle, a design engineer from Mercedes-Benz, and his team. Eberle took the regular E-Class and used the G500 4x4²'s portal axles. The standard E-Class All Terrain uses a multi-link suspension.

Using the G500 4x4²'s suspension components has resulted in the E-Class All Terrain SUV concept getting a massive 420mm ground clearance, up from 160mm of the regular car. The wheels are also huge 20-incher wrapped in 285/50 section. To accommodate these wheels, Eberle had to fit in carbon-fibre wheel arch extenders. These were also 3D printed and the subsequent result was an increase in the overall track by 200mm. Parking issues, anyone?

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All Terrain 4x4² SUV concept, however, isn't your run-of-the-mill off-roader. Having enough ground clearance and a wading depth of 500mm alone doesn't warrant that it will clear the ruts as is evident from the video being circulated. It lacks a low-ratio gearbox and locking differentials. The only armour it comes with for the wild is Mercedes' 4Matic system.

While the regular E-Class All Terrain uses diesel engines, the motor bay of this SUV has been modified to fit in a 330PS/480Nm 3.5-litre V6. It is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Will this SUV make it to production? Well, a lot of people are massively interested in this Volvo V90 Cross Country competition. If it makes it to production, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All Terrain 4x4² SUV will be massively expensive and a one-off. Also, we will like an AMG version, wrapped in this matte grey paint scheme. However, as of now, it looks like one engineer's dream will remain a concept and not become a production reality.
