Mercedes-Benz to debut C-Class Cabriolet in India by end-2016
The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet, which was unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, is set to arrive on Indian shores by end-2016. Mercedes-Benz has already launched the drop-top version of its C-Class sedan in the UK, with deliveries commencing from September 2016. Available in Sport and AMG trims in the UK, it is highly unlikely that the German carmaker will introduce the AMG performance trim in the Indian subcontinent.
The convertible C-Class will get the 1,991cc 4-cylinder petrol engine, shared by the recently launched GLC SUV. The engine puts out 245PS along with 345Nm of torque, which will be mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. The convertible will hit the 0-100kmph mark in 6.7 seconds and will max out at 250kmph.
It shares almost the same design theme as the C-Class sedan and its coupe version. The front end is similar to its sedan sibling, while the side profile takes design cues from the coupe version. The roof of the car features a fabric soft top which is capable of opening and closing in 20 seconds. It's functional at speeds up to 50kmph.
Considering the new car is niche, it will act as a brand strengthening product for the German carmaker rather than a mass produced one. Mercedes-Benz is expected to bring the C-Class Cabriolet as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) which would lead the convertible to be priced around Rs 60-65 lakh range. On the competition forefront, the tri-star drop-top doesn't have any direct rivals but the closest one being the Audi A3 Cabriolet. Although the Audi may tempt customers with its lower price tag, the Mercedes will easily stand tall when it comes to offering features and space.
