Mercedes S500 plug-in hybrid unveil next month at Frankfurt, launch in 2014

Mercedes is set to launch its 2014 S-Class with a plug-in hybrid model, which will be officially unveiled at the next month's 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. The new 2014 Mercedes Benz S500 Hybrid is set to be the first ever plug-in model by the carmaker and claims a fuel efficiency of 40kmpl, while CO2 emissions is estimated to be 69g/km.

The heart of the vehicle is a 334PS 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged engine in sync with an 80-kW electric motor. The combination boasts of an 820Nm peak torque. A 0-100 dash is clocked at 5.5 seconds with the top speed being electronically limited to 250kmph. The electric motor alone can power the car for 29km.

Hybrid, E-MODE (electric power only), E-SAVE (electric power is saved to be used later) and CHARGE (charging while being driven) are the four modes the S500 can be driven in. Added power-efficient features include regenerative braking, engine deactivation for times when the car is coasting and an anticipatory energy management system which uses the navigation system to prep the vehicle's energy resources based on the upcoming 8kms of traveling.

The first production units of the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid are likely to hit the UK and US roads sometime in 2014.
