The automotive sector seems to be taking all the blows from the government to curb pollution in cities. First it was Delhi with the odd-even rule and the ban on large displacement diesel engines, and now Mumbai is following suit. According to the Comprehensive Mobility Plan that was submitted last month by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the government could implement four proposals to reduce pollution and congestion in the city:
- Completely ban the registration of new cars and bikes after a particular date
- Impose a ceiling on the number of new vehicles that can be registered in a year
- Approve registrations for vehicles only if there is proof of parking space in a housing society, complex, etc.
- Impose a ‘congestion tax’ in certain zones, where entry of vehicles will be banned during certain hours.
The Comprehensive Mobility Plan also aims at encouraging public transport over the use of private vehicles. It proposes to build 34 dedicated bus lanes in the city to increase the frequency and improve punctuality of buses. The plan also suggests widening around 700km of roads, imposing charges for parking on the road, building 19 flyovers, 29 rail overbridges, six elevated roads and more than a 100 cycling tracks. The project will carry on till 2034 and its cost is estimated at Rs 1.55 lakh crore.
