Mumbai's first EV charging station set up by Tata Power

Tata Power opens Mumbai's first electric vehicle (EV) charging station at the company's receiving station situated in suburban area of Vikhroli. The station will enable users to charge their electric vehicles.  The charger monitors the electricity units the vehicle consumes as well as the battery status. While this is the first EV station in Mumbai, Tata Power is also planning to set up more and is said to be in talks with other stakeholders. We've asked Tata Power to elaborate on what will be the charges and how do we fix an appointment for charging and other details. We are waiting for them to elaborate on the same.

Installation and expansion of infrastructure is extremely crucial if India is to achieve its plan of making a mass-scale shift to EVs by 2030. Tata power CEO and MD Anil Sardana said that Tata Power aims to expand the thought process behind EVs and also bring in more charging stations so that it becomes easier to adopt an electric vehicle as a means of transportation. Currently in the country, we only have the Mahindra e-Verito as well as the e20 Plus pure electric vehicles. The Nissan Leaf is expected to make an appearance here in a few years from now as well.

Infrastructure and participation had been the biggest gripes barring the growth of electric vehicles in India. With the latter showing progress over the past few years, the attempts made on providing the former were fairly scarce. With the advent of start-ups coming up with EVs along with existing automobile giants inclining towards adding EVs to their 'folio, lack of infrastructure would make the acceptability of EVs extremely lethargic. Such initiatives by giant conglomerates would accelerate the process of providing best of the solutions to achieve a greener tomorrow.

Nagpur already has e-taxis running and has a few charging stations too. It will be interesting to see other states adopt this technique. Tata Motors as a whole too is looking at alternate means of fuel and this includes moving to EVs. The brand is likely to have their EV on Indian roads in the next 2-3 years.
