Mumbles from Rocknrolla drives the new Jaguar XE from London to Berlin
There's much fanfare accompanying the release of the new Jaguar XE. First it was slices of information on the engine and chassis that were revealed worldwide. Then, ahead of the, more details surfaced on the Ingenium line of engines to be debuted in the car. And now, to substantiate their claims of class-leading fuel economy, they have acclaimed British actor, Idris Elba, driving the car from London to Berlin across four countries.
So why have Jaguar picked Mumbles from RocknRolla to test their latest sports saloon? Apparently the actor, who we best remember as Gerard Butler's accomplice from Guy Ritchie's mobster flick, is a massive car-nut. And Jaguar's PR director, Fiona Pargeter maintains that, "As a keen driver with a passion for cars, technology and music, Idris is the perfect fit to test the new Jaguar XE."
Ahead of his 1,200km road trip that spans four countries, the Thor actor said, "My work takes me around the world, but I rarely have the time or luxury of getting behind the wheel for myself. I wanted to do this trip and record the experience through a series of short films. I have long been a fan of Jaguar's incredible sporting heritage and have been truly impressed with how the brand has evolved over the past few years. It's a real privilege being the first person to take the new XE on a significant road trip across Europe." Filmed portions of the drive will be released as an online feature on February 10, 2015.
Along with debuting the new line of diesel and petrol engines and the lightweight aluminium construction, the XE features new in-car technologies including infotainment and audio systems from Meridian. The one driven by Elba is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel mill that makes 163PS. Jaguar claim a fuel economy of 26.5kmpl that's supposedly aided by the aerodynamics, despite the chilly weather in Europe right now.
The Jaguar XE will be showcased in India at the 2016 Auto Expo in Delhi and will be vying for the segment currently occupied by the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and the Volvo S60.
