Built upon the MQB Platform that underlies a slew of VW family vehicles, the new Octavia will share DNA with the Jetta and Golf, among others. Skoda's new design language is evident in the Octavia more than ever, and the car strikes a handsome pose. Skoda claims this is the largest, most comfortable and lightest Octavia ever, along with being one of the safest cars in the world. The company believes it will be a game-changer.

Engine

Skoda will retain the 2.0-litre TDI and 1.8 TSI mill that does duty in the current Laura and will introduce the 1.4 TSI that powers the current base VW Jetta. Skoda has not officially revealed an engine lineup, but they did indicate three engine options.

The quick-shifting DSG 'box will also continue to remain an option for the diesel, as it is for the current Laura, without the flappy paddles. The big news is that all models will come with the option of manual or DSG gearboxes.

We do know that production has already begun for the third generation of the car at Skoda's Aurangabad plant. An October launch seems likely.

The third generation Octavia is to be sold alongside the current Laura, which is effectively the second generation Octavia internationally. Expect to pay a premium for the privilege, and to receive a few more goodies for your money. On the inside, the materials, fit and finish are as we have come to expect from Skoda, feeling solid and upmarket. Confusingly so, in fact, since most Skoda vehicles compete directly with Volkswagen-branded vehicles, which are supposed to be positioned as more premium products.

Update: We were informed at the event that the top of the line petrol variant used the 1.4 TSI Twincharger engine. We have since clarified that it is in fact the existing 1.8 TSI from other Skoda vehicles. The story has been updated to reflect this.
