The new Triumph Thruxton continues to head the Bonneville range. It wears the new 1200cc engine, but it is in a higher state of tune. As we noted earlier, Triumph refused to discuss the details of dimension and specification but was more than happy to highlight the torque figures. The 1200 in the HP (High Power) state of tune makes 112Nm at 4,950rpm, which compares very well to the outgoing Bonneville to be sure. More importantly, the near-5,000rpm, peak torque point suggests that the peak power will likely be in the 7-8,000rpm region and that the Thruxton’s engine will rev significantly higher than the other two engines.

The 2016 Triumph Thruxton and this, the R model, will get bar-end mirrors as standard. Triumph has a huge list – 470 items in total across models – of accessories and parts for the 2016 Bonnevilles to allow owners to create their own customs

The 2016 Triumph Thruxton and its new R top model look sleek and more modern but remain firmly cafe racers with the sporty riding position

Like other R models in the Triumph line, the Thruxton R and the base Thruxton (left and right, respectively) use the same "high power" specification of the new 1200cc parallel twin which puts out 112Nm

The 2016 Triumph Thruxton also gets Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tyres, same as the Street Triple. These are sticky, full-on sporty tyres that should be better for its role than the Street Twin or the T120

The 2016 Triumph Bonnevilles, including the Thruxton, will get exhausts from Vance & Hines. This is the Thruxton R which gets the Brembo Monobloc front brakes with the signature silver callipers mounted radially

Like the other Bonnevilles, the Street Twin and the T120, the Triumph Thruxton also gets the new 6-speed gearbox. Also shared are the electronics. The Triumph Thruxton is ride-by-wire, ABS is standard and it has traction control. The Thruxton spec adds a third Sport mode to the Rain and Road modes. Triumph says all modes offer full power and the ECU only changes how rapidly the twin throttle bodies react to the rider’s throttle inputs.

The twin-pod meters are virtually identical between the 2016 Triumph Bonneville T120 and the 2016 Triumph Thruxton. However, the Thruxton meters looks classier and more upmarket with their lighter colour scheme

The new 1200 HP (high power) motor makes an unspecified amount of power but it’s higher torque peak (in quantity and revs 112Nm) suggests a significantly higher redline. Should be fun to ride!

The 2016 Triumph Thruxton is vastly more sporting in nature than the outgoing motorcycle. Many details reflect this, including the all-metal pegs with their knurled finish, raised outer tips and short feelers

So many details to notice! The Thruxton's top yoke is polished to a mirror finish. Clip-ons mount below the top yoke. Note the aluminium faux tank retainer strap and the offset Monza-style fliptop filler cap (with a locked cap hidden inside)

Note the distinctive but simple shape of the LED DRLs that garnish the new clear-lens head lamp. The chrome Triumph shield on top of the head lamp bulb is a small but evocative detail on the 2016 Triumph Thruxton

Wonderful to look at, the new Triumph Thruxton R model takes the specification significantly forward. Up front are new Showa upside down forks with full adjustability, while at the rear is a set of fully adjustable Ohlins shocks. The front brakes are Brembo’s impressive looking Monoblocs, radially mounted. Wrapping this up is a 17-inch front wheel that wears Pirelli’s excellent Diablo Rosso Corsa tyres.
