Production resumes at Tata Motors' Dharwad plant
Vehicle production has officially resumed at the Dharwad plant of Tata Marcopolo Motors, a subsidiary of Tata Motors. Tata Motors had declared a lockout at the Dharwad plant on February 6, 2016 after its workers took part in an illegal strike with mass absence over wage negotiations.
Tata Motors had accused its workers at the Dharwad plant of disrupting and jeopardising its operations despite the company undertaking an upward wage revision every year, even in adverse market conditions.
In an official statement Tata Motors said, "The management of Tata Marcopolo Motors Ltd has taken a pragmatic view of the situation and decided to lift the lockout to resume operations shortly. We strive to carry out peaceful business in a congenial environment maintaining highest standards of safety, discipline, productivity and quality to fulfill our commitment to the well-being of all the stakeholders."
Tata Motors thanked Tata Marcopolo Karmikara Sangha, neighbouring villages, social and political leaders, eminent personalities in the area, the civil and police administration and the Karnataka labour and industries departments for their efforts in resolving the issue.
Since the lockout was declared, the company had said that it was open for dialogue and solving the issues in a peaceful way but would not give into coercive means and indiscipline. The villages who had given their land for the plant along with political party leaders and members of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industries had requested the state government to intervene for solving the issues.
The Tata Marcopolo plant in Dharwad employs over 2,500 people and has the capacity to manufacture over 15,000 buses per annum.
