Production-spec Tata HBX crossover spotted testing ahead of launch
A new set of images have shown what seems like an almost production-ready version of the upcoming Tata HBX undergoing production. A heavily kitted out version of this small crossover was shown earlier this year at the 2020 Auto Expo, but the HBX in these pictures seems to be a more toned-down iteration.
The front of the HBX seems to draw some inspiration from the bigger Harrier, with a similar split headlamp arrangement. A unique touch seems to be the protruding panel that cuts through the grille. We expect the top-section between the DRLs to be an ornamental panel with the actual air dams placed below. The production car seems to have lost the very aggressive skid plates from the concept, replaced with a more practical bumper with still full-bodied bumper.
Some unique touches to the HBX's high-roof profile are the slightly sloping roofline and a rising window-line that ends in a heavily-styled C-pillar. The body panels around the car seem to have been toned significantly, although there seems to be a large spoiler and prominent roof rails. At the rear, the HBX is characterized by its small, squarish tail lamps, and a boot lid set deep within a swelled out bumper.
The interiors are expected to feature a 7-inch floating touchscreen infotainment unit and a semi-digital instrument cluster display. There is also the new steering wheel from the Altroz. The dash design has a unique boxy theme to it with a stepped layout, squarish air vents and off-road themed additions like faux tied-down straps and a compass.
The HBX is expected to be powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol engine as seen on the Altroz. This makes with 86PS at 6,000rpm and 113 Nm at 3,300rpm. This is expected to be paired with a 5-speed manual and an AMT. It is based on the ALFA structure, same as the Altroz.
The Tata HBX will compete against rivals such as the Mahindra KUV100 and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. It is expected to be priced from around Rs 5 lakh when it launches. The HBX was expected to debut during the festive season but Tata Motors seems to have deferred its new launch in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We now expect to see the HBX on our roads by early next year.
