CHENNAI: The MMRT Track in Sriperumbudur, celebrating its 25th year, is set for high octane action with 133 entries from all over the country lining up on different grids for the second round of the MMSC FMSCI Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship to be held over three days from Friday.

Organisers Madras Motor Sports Club could not have hoped for a more encouraging response with the return of top-end Group B (modified) class, which boasts of India’s top racing riders, and the MMSC Honda One Make Championship (CBR 150 and 250) while the Suzuki Gixxer Cup will further boost the grid.

One of the star attractions of the weekend will be TVS Racing’s 27-year old Jagan Kumar from Chennai who created history in June this year by becoming the first Indian to start from pole position and also win the race in the Asian Road Racing Championship at the Sentul circuit in Indonesia.

Lining up alongside Jagan in the Group B class will be other international riders like Moto-Rev Yamaha Racing duo of Rajini Krishnan and Deepak Ravikumar, besides Ten10 Racing’s Sarath Kumar all of whom have had their share of glory on foreign racing tracks.

While the big boys of two-wheeler racing will be hogging the limelight, the other categories will not be suffering for want of competition or talent as was evident in the first round of the championship that was held in Coimbatore last month.

Local lad Vishwadev Muraleedharan of Sparks Racing, who dominated Group D (165cc) Novice class with a double in the first round, will be looking to extend his run of success as also Tiruchy’s Mathana Kumar of Ten10 Racing who won both races in the Group C (165cc) Open category.

In the Suzuki Gixxer Cup, that has attracted a total of 48 entries, the spotlight will be on Abhishek Vasudev from Bengaluru and Kerala’s Amarnath Menon who won both the races in the Open and Novice categories, respectively, in the first round.

The Honda One Make Championship will see 40 riders in the CBR 150 class and 14 on the CBR 250 bike, including the likes of Sumit Lucas Topo of Pro Lap Racing and Ten10 Racing’s Hari Krishnan R, both of whom have enjoyed success in the previous seasons.

To spread the sport and encourage young talent, riders can take part in only one group / class of race so that there will be a new champion in every class.

Likewise, any rider is allowed to take part in only one One Make Championship apart from the National Championship. Thus, there will be fresh crop of riders in various championships.
