Spec comparison: Mercedes-Benz E220d LWB vs Audi A6 35 TDI vs Jaguar XF 2.0 diesel vs BMW 520d vs Volvo S90 D4

The battle for supremacy in the luxury car space has got a lot more interesting with Mercedes-Benz India launching the new, 2017 E-Class, E220d LWB at Rs 57.14 lakh. Before this, Mercedes-Benz India only sold the E350d with the 3-litre V6 motor (in additon to a 2-litre petrol), albeit at a steep price, which was a bit more than the competition. The E220d, however, takes care of that as the price is almost in the same ball park of the Audi A6, Volvo S90 D4 and the Jaguar XF. The 2017 BMW 5 Series is set to go on sale in India on June 29, 2017 and going by how BMW prices its products, expect the new 5 Series 520d to also sport a competitive price tag.

Mercedes-Benz India made a bold move by launching the long wheelbase E-Class in India, and that’s because a majority of the customers will be chauffeur driven. The 3,079mm wheelbase of the E220 is the longest in this class, which also automatically translates to acres of rear knee room. That’s not to say that the others are cramped but the Mercedes sure does have an advantage. Coupled with the plush ride of Mercedes-Benz, the E-Class is quite a popular car in the segment.

Audi A6

The Audi A6 is another sedan that boasts of a feature packed cabin, shared with the flagship offering, the A8. The Jaguar XF is another car that’s aimed at those that want a quick car with good driving dynamics and that quintessential British style.

Speaking of style, the Volvo S90 is certainly one of the most beautiful luxury sedans in the market. The elegant lines that run along the car look stunning and the interior is just at another level. One look at the gorgeous S90 and it’s guaranteed to make you turn your head. What also helps its case is that it stands out in the sea of German luxury sedans, just like the Jag.

The BMW 5 Series has traditionally been a sedan that offers a good mix of handling and comfort, of course with the scale tipping more towards the handling part. For 2017, however, BMW has gone to great lengths to offer even better comfort than the predecessor. Read our first drive review to know more.

All cars in this price bracket feature a long list of standard equipment, be it LED head and tail lamps or a high quality music system. It is a similar case with the safety equipment.

All cars in this comparo feature 2-litre diesel motors, with the E220’s motor producing the most power at 194PS. The Jaguar’s motor produces the least power, here, at 179PS, however, it does churn out the most torque at 430Nm. All other cars produce the same, 400Nm of torque.

The Mercedes-Benz’s motor is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, while the Audi’s is coupled to a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The rest get 8-speed automatics. The higher number of gear ratios in the E220d should also translate to better fuel economy. We shall check this in a full blown road test and comparison test soon.

For now, take a look at how the new Mercedes-Benz E220d stacks up against the competition.
