Maruti Suzuki is finally foraying into the LCV segment. Its first effort in this space, the Super Carry Turbo light commercial vehicle, codenamed ‘Y9T’, is ready for launch and should go on sale anytime soon. The Carry name is synonymous with a light truck that Suzuki has been producing in Japan from 1961, In fact the Omni, the longest running Maruti Suzuki product is essentially the van version of the seventh generation Suzuki Carry truck. Spotted at a stockyard in India, the new Maruti Suzuki Super Carry Turbo (Turbo, since it features the Celerio’s DDiS 125 motor) will be launched shortly. It is expected to be launched in a phased manner starting with regions like Punjab and Gujarat and then thereafter in Haryana and other states.
Maruti Suzuki has been developing this LCV from late 2013. The Carry for India seems to have been specially developed as it doesn’t resemble or share any parts from the various generations of Suzuki Carry trucks sold in Japan. The test mules have been spotted couple of times in India but the pictures here are the most detailed we have seen so far.
A high ranking official from Maruti had confirmed in 2015 that the LCV will be launched in this financial year. The new Maruti Suzuki Super Carry Turbo commercial vehicle will be powered by the same 0.8-litre turbodiesel motor from the Celerio. The engine in the hatchback is known to be a sprightly unit but doesn’t boast the best refinement around. In a LCV, this shouldn’t matter much though as in our opinion, the NVH levels should be better than competition. The Maruti Super Carry LCV will also be available in a CNG trim, which will most probably be a detuned 1.2-litre motor from the Eeco. The engine is expected to be mated to a 4-speed transmission. It is likely to be offered with a 1-tonne and 1.5-tonne payload configurations as well. Since it is a commercial vehicle, expect the Carry to feature a front engine, RWD layout while the chassis, a body on frame (ladder) type.
The Tata Ace as well as the Mahindra Maxximo will be the main competitors of the Maruti Suzuki Super Carry Turbo. It’ll be interesting to see the country’s largest producer of passenger cars battle it out with the established segment rivals.
